For some time now, news from the world’s largest online poker room PokerStars have been rather depressing. In August PokerStars parted ways with well-known Latin American players Humberto Brenes, Angel Guillen and Jose “Nacho” Barbero, and in September the poker site said goodbye to 2009 Main Event champion Joe Cada, “The Flying Dutchman” Marcel Luske and WSOP bracelet winner Alex Kravchenko.
Only yesterday Full Tilt, that is also owned by Amaya Gaming, announced that they are not going to renew the sponsorship contracts with high stakes players Viktor “Isildur1” Blom and Gus Hansen. Speculations took off: Who was next in line?
Fortunately good news came out a couple of days ago as PokerStars announced a new member of Team Pro Online: Celeste Oroná, who goes by the screen name ”LadyMaCe86” online. Oroná is a 27 years old cash game player, who lives in Argentina. She has got a degree in Business Management, but quit her job as an accountant in November last year to play poker for a living. On her blog she said:
I feel extremely happy about the decision of quitting my job and I’m 100% sure it was the right thing to do. Some people have told me that I’m crazy because I’m only a micros/low stakes player and I should wait until I reach higher stakes. Besides online poker is not as profitable as it used to be and games are getting tougher. Those are great arguments but I believe in taking risks, that’s the whole point of playing poker right? You take a risk in order to win something bigger. Well, that’s my life at this moment
Oroná primarily plays cash games at micro/low-stakes from 50NL to 100NL, but she has also played a couple of live tournaments, most recently LAPT in Peru. On her blog she’s been very open about her ups and downs, posting graphs, setting goals and telling about her experiences moving up stakes.
On the PokerStars Blog Oroná shared her thoughts of joining Team Pro Online:
When I first learned I was going to be part of the team I was over the moon. It was something completely unexpected and it still feels very unreal, but now I’m here I’m ready to do my best. Personally it is a huge motivation to keep improving my game and moving up stakes, but it is also a great opportunity to get in touch with other players and help beginners who are experiencing everything I had to go through not so long ago.
With the addition of Oroná Team Pro Online has got three female players: Oroná, Adrienne “talonchick” Rowsome and Katarina “Katerina289” Malasidou. Adding more female pros – as we have seen 888poker do as well – is a positive trend, we can only support. Congrats to Team Pro Online and to Celeste Oroná on the new sponsorship.
