Just two weeks ago Argentina’s Maria Lampropoulos finished runner-up in WPT National Brussels for €68,200 ($75k) versus Sebastian Ta from France. And today Lampropoulos was heads-up in a major tournament again. But this time around she was not facing an unknown villain but her boyfriend, high stakes tournament player and WSOP bracelet winner Ivan Luca.
Going in to the 8-handed final table of the €1,1000 Main Event in Rozvadov in the Czech republic Luca was a massive chip leader with more than 5 million chips to his name, while Lampropoulos was third with nearly 2.5 million in chips.
After almost six hours of play David Urban was eliminated in third place, and the Argentine couple was heads-up for the title, the trophy and the €124,890 up top. However, they agreed upon at deal, that secured Luca €101k and Lampropoulos 95k with €5k and the trophy left for the winner.
At the start of the heads-up battle Luca was in the lead, and even if Lampropoulos was able to chip up and overtake the chip lead, Luca soon recovered and managed to surpass his girlfriend. In the final hand of the night, and after what seemed like hours of painful tanking, all the chips finally went in on a board reading . Lampropoulos had rivered a straight with , but Luca was in even better shape with his that gave him a winning flush.
Even though we did not get our first female champion in Rozvadov on International Women’s Day, Maria Lampropoulos came very close, and with the kind of run she is on, we will not be too surprised to see her take down a big title soon.
